My design journey began somewhat unexpectedly in 2018 when my husband and I purchased our first renovation project. Having always been far more interested in creative subjects than academic ones since school, and with a natural eye for colour and detail, I was excited to take on the project and document the process on social media. As I shared our renovation, I quickly gained traction—growing from 0 to 10,000 followers in just a couple of weeks—long before viral reels made quick growth easy! I began receiving messages almost daily asking if I was an interior designer or if I could help design other people’s homes. At the time, I didn’t see myself as a designer—I simply wanted to develop the skills to design my own space.
As the renovation progressed, I decided to further my skills by taking courses in design and learning CAD software, which opened up new opportunities. I became deeply engrossed in the process, enjoying it far more than my day-to-day job, and it became clear that this was my true passion. Once the renovation was complete, and with my newly acquired design skills and first hand experience of our own project, I decided to take the plunge and respond to the requests for help, gaining additional experience working with a range of different styles and client briefs.
At the same time, I began freelancing for design studios, helping them with CAD drawings and 3D renderings, which gave me invaluable insight into the industry. It wasn’t long before I realised that my future was in design, and after a year of somehow balancing a full time job and my freelance design, I made the decision to establish my own business.
I started with Virtual Design (E-Design), which allowed me to work on small projects from Hong Kong to the USA and beyond, all while gaining diverse experience. As the business grew, we expanded into Full-Service Design Studio, managing projects from concept to completion. About two years ago, we introduced our Hybrid Service, which bridges the gap between virtual and full-service design, giving clients more flexibility on the service while still delivering almost the same level of involvement as our full-service projects. Today, we’ve grown to a team of six (soon to be seven by the end of the year), and the business continues to evolve. The journey has had its challenges, but each experience has shaped the business into what it is today, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
